SPARKLING

We’ve all done it – we’ve asked for a glass of Champagne when we mean sparkling. But then the real Champagne in France was like, ‘Hey, stop that’ and got litigious about other people using their good name. That shizz has been trademarked under the Madrid system since 1891 and further protected by the EU since the 90s, so that even Champagne method and Methode Champenoise are off-limits on sparkling labels.

Because of that, most countries have adopted their own word (and cheat codes) for sparkling. Italy has Spumante, Spain has Cava, South Africa has Sekt. Outside of Champagne, French regions Alsace and Burgundy produce Crémant.

So how best to differentiate the many, many different types? Let’s imagine sparkling wine like a big reality TV family. Let’s imagine the sparkling wine production methods as the Kardashians. Let’s keep up with them.
